A Scottish citizen was partly responsible for starting the tea industry in Sri Lanka. James Taylor, pictured below, arrived in Ceylon in 1852. He worked with another Scotsman, Thomas Lipton, to grow the tea industry in Ceylon.

Scotland has a very long tradition of tea drinking. Tea drinking was introduced to Scotland in 1680 by Mary of Modena, then Duchess of York. She was visiting her first husband, better known as King James VII of Scotland.
